What is the Message Center?

SkyTel Message Center gives you a single point of contact for all your messages. Pager messages, voicemail messages, email and faxes, Message Center keeps you in the loop and in control. Message Center customers have two ways to view their messages— on their Message Center pager and on their password-protected Message Center website.

What is the purpose of the New User Set-Up process?

The purpose of the New User Set-Up is to guide you through the steps that are required for you to begin using your Message Center. We have taken steps to assure that you initially set up the most critical components. Once you’ve gone through the Set-Up, you’ll be linked to the main Message Center page where you can begin viewing messages, exchanging emails and controlling your messages.

Why do I need a special password for the Message Center website?

Your unique email/password combination ensures that you and only you have on-line access to your messages. You’ll use this password each time you log on to the site. For your first visit, you can use your pager’s subscriber Security Code (you’ll find the code listed on the packing slip of your device). However, we recommend that you select a new password at your first visit.

Why should I record a Message Center greeting?

By recording a greeting, you’ll let callers know that they have dialed the correct number to reach you. Your greeting can be a simple message recorded in your voice that invites callers to listen to the prompts that the automated attendant will provide following your greeting. Your greeting will also reduce the possibility of getting messages from "wrong numbers" since those callers will realize their mistake when they hear your voice.

What is the purpose of the signature on my device?

Your Message Center pager makes it easy to create and send emails, or to send text messages to other SkyTel subscribers. By entering your name into the Signature option of the device, your name will automatically be appended to each message. You won’t have to sign your name to each message, and the recipient will always know who sent the message.

Do I have to choose an email address for my Message Center service?

Yes. Your Message Center email address enables you to receive notification of new emails on your pager and to view email at the Message Center website. Even if you choose not to take advantage of the email function, you will still need that address to log on to the Message Center website. Your email address can be any name you choose, such as your first initial and last name (i.e. jsmith).

Exactly how does the email work?

You have two choices with Message Center email.

  1. You can publish your Message Center address as your primary email address. When email comes to this address, you’ll receive a notification to your pager. You can then have some of the text sent to your pager, or you can access it later at the Message Center website. The website gives you full functionality to read, reply, and forward your email. You can also set up Message Center to automatically send a copy of any email you receive to another address, so that the email will also be available at that location.
  2. You can have a copy of your email forwarded from your current email address to your Message Center email address. When Message Center receives the copy, it will send a notification to your pager. You can then have some of the text sent to your pager, or you can view it later either on the Message Center website, or on your email address location.

If I’m not sure what email system I have, how can I find out?

If you are unsure about what email system you are using, try looking on the screen where you go to read your email. You may also try looking in the "Help" section of your email system which may be located at the top of your screen.

What if my email system doesn’t allow forwarding?

If your current system won’t let you forward, just use Message Center as your primary email address. You create your own unique email address with your name such as jgsmith@email.skytel.com, and give this address to all of your personal and business contacts. Email sent to this address will be available on the Message Center website. In addition, you can choose to have a copy of all email forwarded to your corporate email or personal email address. This will give you access to your email no matter where you are, without giving up the email notification and control that Message Center provides.

If I forward a copy of email sent to my Message Center email address to another email account, can I still access it from the Message Center website?

Yes. We simply forward a copy to your other email address. The email still remains at the Message Center website for you to review at any time.

What will actually be displayed from an email on my device?

When you receive an email in your Message Center, whether it was forwarded from another email system or someone sent it directly to your Message Center address, you will receive the Sender, Subject, number of characters and a Yes/No indication of whether there is an attachment or not. Once you receive this notification, you can decide whether you want to read more of the email, forward it to a fax or forward it to another email.

How long does email remain on the Message Center website?

You can keep up to 10Mb at the Message Center website. This includes the email text as well as any attachments. If you exceed 10Mb, you will receive a reminder that it’s time to clear out email that you no longer need. You’ll have 72 hours to select which files to delete. The system will then automatically delete the oldest email first until your size is below 10Mb once again.

What if I only want to receive notification of email on a particular subject?

Your initial Message Center set-up allows you to filter notifications based on email addresses. From the main Message Center web site, you will also be able to set additional email filters. For example, if you only want to be notified of emails containing the word "customer," you can create a rule that looks for that word within the body of the email. You can also set up rules to look for particular words or phrases within the From, To, CC or Subject lines.

What is my Default Fax?

When a fax is sent to your Message Center number, you will have the option of directing it to your Default Fax, an Alternative Fax, or an email address. The fax will not appear at any location until you give the command. Your Default fax should be the number of the fax machine you use most often, probably the machine at your office or home. This will make it easy for you to quickly accept the fax without typing in a fax number.

When I receive a fax at my Message Center, can I forward it to an email address rather than a fax number?

Yes. The fax will be sent as an email attachment. (Because a fax is really just an image, it is attached as a graphics file rather than sent as email text.) When you open the email, the viewer included in your operating system (such as Windows 95) will allow you to launch, view and print the fax.

Can I view my faxes on the Message Center website?

Yes. Select "View Faxes" from the Message Center home page, then select the fax you want to view. The fax view of your internet browser will automatically launch, and you will be able to view and print the fax image.

What is the "From" address that I see on fax notifications?

The name or number shown in the "From" line is the identification of the sending fax machine. This identification is the name that you see printed across the top of an incoming fax. Generally, this is the company’s name, which has been programmed into the fax machine. If no name has been programmed into the fax machine, you may only see the fax number.

What will actually be displayed from a Fax on my device?

When you receive a fax to your Message Center number, you will receive a notification of where the fax was sent from and the number of pages. Upon reading the notification, you can forward it to your Default fax machine or to an email address.

How does the Caller ID feature work?

Caller ID information will appear on your pager when someone calls your Message Center number and leaves you either a numeric pager message or a voice mail message. You will see the name (business or residential) associated with the phone that was used to send you the message. If Caller ID information is not available for that phone, we will send you the city and state where the phone is located.

How can I receive notification of my office voice mail?

The simplest way to set up notification is to forward your office phone to your Message Center number when you’re going to be away from your office. Your callers will then hear your personal greeting, and will be able to leave you a voice mail or numeric message. You will then be notified that a message has been received.

If I forward my home or office phone to Message Center, what will the caller hear?

The caller will hear a short series of rings as the call is forwarded to your Message Center number. They will then hear whatever personal greeting you’ve recorded, and they will be given the option of leaving you a numeric page or voice mail message. If you’ve added optional Operator Dispatch service, they’ll also be given the option of dictating a message to a SkyTel operator.

If your phone system does not allow forwarding, you may be able to have your office voicemail send a notification to your pager when a message is received. Set-up instructions for many popular voice mail systems are available here at our website. Your telecommunications administrator (or whoever is responsible for your phone system) can follow these instructions to set up the pager notification feature of your phone system.

What is Operator Dispatch?

Operator Dispatch is a way for callers who don’t have access to the internet or software to send you a text message. Callers to your Message Center can dictate a message to a SkyTel operator who will in turn type in the message and send it to your Message Center pager. Operator Dispatch is an additional service option. For more information, contact your SkyTel sales representative, call 800-SKY-USER or email us at skyuser@skytel.com.
